One of the original Mercury project astronauts, he was the 4th American in space and 2nd to orbit the earth in Aurora 7. The sole remaining astronaut of the Mercury 7 group is now John Glenn, 92, who was the first to orbit earth in his capsule Friendship 7 before Carpenter's flight. Thanks to Glenn, the first camera in space wasn't some Nikon or Hasselblad, but a Minolta Hi-Matic compact he smuggled aboard to get some photos of his 3 orbits.
