Er , we been well and truly liquidated this evening, managed to walk to the car ( takes about 10 mins) in a lull in the deluge but had to be rather wary about getting extra wet from the side then, I do reckon some drivers do like to drive through the rather river like water running in the gutter to see how much they can spray onto pedestrians- fortunately I was on the lookout and avoided the muddy water being sprayed about. |

rustyruth Posts: 18773 Joined: 23rd Oct 2012 Location: England | Posted at 13:10 on 9th July 2014 It was an offence so I assume it still is, laws never seem to get scrapped just forgotten about, so I suspect most new bobbies don't even know about it. It's still an offence to beat your carpets at the side of the road in some towns, and also in some areas taxis are required to carry a bale hay for the horse. No I never dealt with anyone for that particular offence Vince |

It apparently dates back to the days of the horse and carriage so as not to offend the ladies, who when they needed to have a pee stood over a drain, which was covered by their long dresses. lol Ah, how times change, or do they? Seen anybody doing it anywhere other than a toilet (Not suggesting you all watch of course) lol Another....if you are in the street without a coin of the realm on your person you are considered a vagrant! That's me most days! lol Anybody got anymore old byelaws?

A lot of the weird and wonderful laws relating to vagrancy stem from the time following the Napoleonic Wars when men were returning home penniless and in a lot of cases homeless. I used to know loads of strange laws but over time I've forgotten most of them. |
