The smell of them is supposed to deter spiders. If you Google conker fights, it will enlighten you of their other use over here |

Sk Lawson Posts: 4014 Joined: 7th Oct 2010 Location: USA | Posted at 04:25 on 8th September 2013 I looked at the picture that Sue provided us, no we don't have them here that I know of, we do have Chestnut trees, far and few between I only found two of them in the Portland area... but they grow really spikey.. so maybe another variety? I traded off two grandkids last night or an different one tonight. We are taking down the kiddies pool this weekend. .I planted 10 giant yellow daffodils, 10 giant red tulips... beside those, and 20 purple allium flowers that grow kind of on spikes...in purple. Ground underneath the bark dust is bone dry here..despite some rain recently. I hope I was able to help the daughter in-law somewhat on the binding.... she's making for an quilt. Her biggest problem was making the pieces to sew to each other with points on them. She messed those up even more by twisting the fabric in the pieces also But I think I got her straightend out if she listened carefully enough.. I put push ins in the right side and told her to make sure they are all, facing her. Oldest grandson and grandpa went to the Hospital fair today to get bigger bike helmets for free...and then they came home and did recycling of bottles. When I go grocery shopping I round off my checks I write...and put the change in to an glass jar for their "Christmas Fund" at the end of the year..they so far have $10 each. Then if they want to go see an movie they can over the Holiday vacation. If I can get them each another $5. they might be able to take in two movies, one over Thanksgiving and the other over Christmas. Saves that, "I don' t have nothing to do" bit. So someone broke into Buckingham Palace the other night I see, but no one was home as she's in Scotland right now..Balmoral Castle. I keep thinking of the hats that are worn in England. I bought this calendar for my granddaughter's room this year...September they are in an hat shop....one's wearing what looks like an messed up birds nest with an big rose in front... the other big to little daisies in pink five of them stacked vertically with spikes coming out of it...around them on pedestels are one hat looks like an snake where riga mortis has befallen it sitting upwards, and another loosk like an mouse wearing an bell skirt, complete with ears but no face, and the third one just an big bow with hairy things coming off in angles out of it...and the name of the shop is called "Fabulous Fashional Tas"..one of the ladies says...these " facinastors" are all the rage....looking in her hand mirror...the other lady says as she's looking in her hand mirror "Let's wear them to Bridge club!"... It's really cute, if I could have this into my avatar, I would. I think you'd all enjoy the humor. I was reading abour this Season's "Dancing with the Stars" in the paper yesterday..Sept 16th. Must go for now.
