Clearwater Court and Reading Bridge House, Reading

View across the Thames towards Clearwater Court, the headquarters building of Thames Water. Its futuristic style contrasts sharply with the rather dated 70's slab of Reading Bridge House to the left.

Doorway of St. James' Church, Reading

Doorway of St. James' Church, Reading

The arches have features reminiscent of the Chevrons and Beakheads seen on ancient Norman churches, but the building is in fact 19th century (Architect A.W.N. Pugin). It seems that the Norman Romanesque style was adopted to be in keeping with the ruins of Reading Abbey nearby, which would have been built in this style.

Garden near the Abbey Ruins, Reading

Garden near the Abbey Ruins, Reading

This small garden near the Abbey Ruins has as its centrepiece a bronze statue by Elisabeth Frink. The figure is a replica of one of three figures in a tableau of the Dorset Martyrs at Dorchester. Rather spookily, the figure chosen to stand here near to the Abbey ruins represents Death or the Executioner, perhaps symbolising the destruction that went on here.

Clearwater Court, Reading

Clearwater Court, Reading

Clearwater Court is the headquarters building of Thames Water, and is the latest of a number of buildings built on this site. In this view, the building looks circular, but in reality it is a horse-shoe shape, with the open part of the horseshoe facing the Thames.

St. James' Church, Reading

St. James' Church, Reading

St. James' Church stands near to the east end of the Forbury Gardens and close to the ruins of Reading Abbey. The Church is built in the Romanesque style, with the decoration of the arches of the doors and windows strongly influenced by the Norman styles which would have been used on the now ruined Abbey. The Church was opened in 1840. The architect was A.W.N. Pugin.

De Montfort House, Fry's Island, Reading

De Montfort House, Fry's Island, Reading

This attractive house is situated on the downstream end of Fry's Island (also known as De Montfort Island) on the River Thames. The house is now a private residence but has at various times in the past been used as an Officer's Club and a Blues Bar. It is only accessible by boat, providing an attractive degree of privacy, while being only minutes from the centre of Reading. The island was the location of a duel of honour in 1163 between Robert de Montfort and Henry Earl of Essex, the standard bearer to Henry II. Henry of Essex was badly wounded in combat, but legend has it that he was nursed back to health by the monks of Reading Abbey, where he remained as a monk for the rest of his days.

This is the only remaining building of the vast Huntley & Palmers Biscuit Factory. The building seen here was once the company offices, then from 1938 it housed the social club, and now has been converted to residential use.

The white building in the background, once owned by the Metal Box company, is soon to be demolished to make way for yet more offices. The Maiwand Lion will no doubt see many more office buildings rise and fall before it in its turn disappears.

The Frink Statue near the Abbey Ruins, Reading

The Frink Statue near the Abbey Ruins, Reading

The robed statue standing alone in the walled garden near to the Abbey Ruins is a copy of the figure of Death in the Dorset martyrs trio by Elisabeth Frink. I do not know for certain why this statue was placed here, but the connection may be that the Dorset Martyrs were executed for their Catholic Faith, as was the last Abbott of Reading, the Blessed Hugh Faringdon, who is numbered amongst the English Martyrs.

Island on Kennet & Avon Canal near Blake's Wharf, Reading

The pretty iron bridge leading to the island is kept locked, which is just as well, because the statue of the angler would no doubt otherwise have been stolen for scrap long ago.

The Maiwand Lion in the Forbury Gardens, Reading

The Maiwand Lion in the Forbury Gardens, Reading

The statue was erected in 1886 as a memorial to the deaths of 329 men of the 66th Berkshire Regiment at the Battle of Maiwand in Afghanistan. The sculptor was George Blackall Simonds. An erroneous myth persists in Reading that Simonds later committed suicide because he believed that the stance of the lion was anatomically incorrect. In fact Simonds researched his subject carefully and went on to live another 43 years.
