Posts: Joined: 1st Jan 1970 | editPosted at 20:40 on 30th August 2011 Good to see you Ron....Yeah, East Coast right now isn't fairing to well...40 now killed and lots and lots of damage. It will take them some time to pull out of it...there's the intial "shock" phase in losing your house and everything you own. One road they showed had been washed out in five different places....and I understand just below (Southeast) where Krissy lives is an very dangerous flooding area...it's going through that area out to sea from up north New England...in the tune of at least two rivers. It will still take another two days before the rivers return to their banks...but they are getting there...slowly... running wildly fast. Makes you want to cling to your peanut butter for "comfort" just looking at it all. But we had this going on last winter up at Mt. Hood...there the River decided to go down the middle of the road instead of in it's banks...but went down the old course also in areas. You would never know it now though...they completely re-built the road since then... It will happen back east also. What saves Oregon "sometimes" is it's law all houses must be back 1,000 feet from any water source... 1,000 feet on either side is public property...that includes our beaches also. Not that they haven't had problems maintinaing it though. Fella owns Hollywood Video came up here and built himself an house looks more like an warehouse its so big...he sold it after he rearranged one boundry of it along the Williamette River with tons of rock and dirt...to the tune of millions of dollars...state sued him and made him remove it all, claiming it would change the course of the river during floods that could harm downtown Portland. But they this year started rebuilding "Front Street" and building it 15 feet higher...to make an second wall for flooding.... to keep the Willamette out of downtown Portland. So we have an sea wall and this street when finsished next year. This morning see's an big picture of Mt. Hood in photgraphs, they have been taking Laser's across Oregon to see underground and under forrest terrain and found an unknow earthquake fault 10 miles west of Parkdale, north of Mt. Hood before you get inot Hood River. They named it the Blue Ridge Fault and are going back to dig trenches to see what they can find out about it..as to it's era, magnitude, history... if they can. They show an picture of the terrain where the land opposing side of it at one time jolted 6 feet horizonatlly. It's results will influence building codes in the area. They are now because of this worried about the towers that come out of Bonneville Dam toward California.. and also possibly the Bonneville Dam itself. That area up there couple of years ago saw an Natural Gas pipeline break also, made the sky look like an send off of an rocket inot space before they got it shut down for repairs...I'm thinking it was on the Washington side though. Anyway. Isn't it amazing what we can do these days with the right equiptment. Weather clearing up after an couple of moody cloudy days an light mositure...just in timr fo rone more last blackberry picking session. Always learning more about what the Native Americans use to eatyou know...they did have an better diet then we do today...thier ancestors weren't whacking out the best of the best in the land because they were thought of as "weeds"...or an nusiance to put up with in teh case of fruit and nuts falling on the ground. My Ayurveda Encyclopedia says of blackberries..Builds blood, good for dysentary and diarrhea, goiter, cholera, hemorrhoids, and insect bites or stings. Bark is used on inflammations...The seed powder useful in diabetes, reducing sugar in the urine and excessive thirst. There are tremedous wildlfires going on at the Warm Springs Indian Reservation for several days now, near the Deshutes River....they are getting media attention having burned thousands of acres of land...there's several of them..caused by ligthening....but now they threatened 190 homes in the area and another 90 homes in another area. NA's looked "concerned" on TV about them also. Here's hoping everyone can get things taken care of here soon weatherwise and and kiddie wise as the schools all start and we all can get back on line more to just "chat". I've spent considerable time this month to getting ready for winter...wiht food storage. Unless there is an an big surprise in store that's an pleasant one...no Christmas this year for us most likely. I don' t see how we can do it...as I try to save for property taxes and none of our credit cards are getting paid off now...we need lowered credit card interest for lower wage earners...or else I need someone to "adopt me"....would anyone like to adopt an older lady? Pay for some "re-arranging and I could be an younger lady!... Maybe I should change my name to someone else....how about how about Ms. LA-LA Rockerfellew-Ashton Parton Klinger?...just an suggestion.( LRAPK) Short for " Ms. L-your-A-Pack"... Just having fun....later. |

Sk Lawson Posts: 4014 Joined: 7th Oct 2010 Location: USA | Posted at 17:32 on 31st August 2011 Well, we picked our blackberries last night for about an hour and brought home another 3 gallons probably.....hubby's hands were clean, mine were red from berry juice...he says to me..."See, my hands are clean"...I said that's because as you pick.. your not blessing the vines, blessing the land, and Thanking God for an harvest like I'm doing..., I really get " into it" when I pick berries...point made,..... he didn't say any more. If I go back an next time it will be to make an cobbler for over Labort Day and that's its for me this year on blackberries. I'll have about 6 Gallons total and that should take us through winter with no problems. I have some more cards to send out to POE members...so will be working on them here soon probably...these go out from the USA this time around. . Wonder why we haven't heard from Marjorie....I thought she was in an relaitvely safe area from Hurricane Irene...they say Thursday, rivers might be back in thier banks in New Jersey. Towns are cut off in New England, death toll up to 43 now, lots of roads out. Must go for now. Look for the "silver lining" in it all folks...there is one. Ratehr it be employment or structurally strengthing out teh road systems so it can't happen again....though I know that will take some time. Watching all this, I think I'll take my small pomd out back that has an crack in it and do like I did before...clean it out and put fresh sand in it...kiddies like the sand pile....and we have it for making sand bags to deter flooding out in front of the street...which we have used before over winter, besides to weight down the back of th pickup for over snowy roads....and for de-icing. Just an precaution to do and as I said, if we never use it but for the kid's to play in..that's "ok" also. |
