Competing against CinemaScope and the fledgling Cinerama systems, the first film using his developed technology was Ben Hur (1959), though in 1965 he'd returned to cinematography, doing the underwater shots for the James Bond film,Thunderball. I think the first film shot earlier in CinemaScope was John Sturges' Bad Day At Black Rock. My favourite: Pictures \| Towns \| Attractions

Just seen that they think he choked on his own vomit after a drinking binge - so many young people these days go out & get absolutely drunk & think it is great fun.
