J.D. Salinger, author of 'Catcher in the Rye,' dies at 91.

That is so sad. I love his work. Frown

Though not a famous obit, I love the inscription on this Hampshire Grenadier's gravestone among the outdoor tombstones at Winchester Cathedral:

In Memory of Thomas Thetcher

A Grenadier in the North Reg. of Hants Militia, who died of a violent Fever contracted by drinking Small Beer when hot the 12th of May 1764. Aged 26 Years.

In grateful remembrance of whose universal good will towards his Comrades, this Stone is placed here at their expence, as a small testimony of their regard and concern. Here sleeps in peace a Hampshire Grenadier, Who caught his death by drinking cold small Beer, Soldiers be wise from his untimely fall And when ye're hot drink Strong or none at all.

An Honest Soldier never is forgot whether he die by Musket or by Pot.

Amen!

I didn't know until today that Pernell Roberts, who played Adam Cartwright on Bonanza, died last week.

I think he was the last one from the series living.

I liked Bonanza.

And Adam Cartwright was a real hunk, too, Sue, although I'm a bit partial to Hoss.

Are you far from Carson City?  Wasn't that the closest town to the Ponderosa?

Adam was the best looking, but Hoss was a gentle giant. I remember when he died, so young, so sad. At least Adam (Pernell Roberts) lived to 81.

Carson City is about three hours from where I live.

My mother was a country western fanatic. Lol. I grew up on re-runs of Bonanza and The Big Valley.

Adam was my favorite brother on Bonanza and Jerrod was my favorite on The Big Valley.

Paul, they were talking about the book "Catcher in the Rye the other night in coast to coast, three murders, separate incidents all had the book and thought of it as "Inspiration" for them....one of them was John Lennon, The Beatles "killer". Then they say that it was banned over here by most school directors from reading it. What is it about, as it sounded like maybe it had politcal theology over-tones.
