I'm baaackk...this time with hubby, unpacked, prescriptions filled, and lunch made, he's doing the first of his therapy...and resting somewhat....

Heavy reading guys, but Rueters left an article on Scotland's descison to possibly be independent of Britiain in 2014...http://www.reuters.com/article 2012/10/09/us-britain-scotland-independence/id USBRE8981F120121009.

If that doesn't come in your you go to reddit.com and it's in one of the threads there....with another interesting read above it posted callled "hiddencamper offers a Nuclear engineer's opinion of the differences between Fukushima Daiichi and American Nuclear facilities"....be sure and read it past the part where he discusses earthquake proffing these power plants...as there's an lot of interesting information being discussed. This is the kind of stuff that my science class at school taught...though it was an speciality class I was taking back then because of my IQ  testing I guess, it was all non-life science. By that I mean nucluear energy, computers, electricity sort of stuff. By now Nano technology has replaced an good share of it, and I find that interesting also. Not many people are willingly to discuss these matters in an simple and clear way of understanding them also...these guys do an good job.

'ello Ron mate. To be honest I blew a fuse and tried to short circuit the repair process but encountered resistance from a battery of high voltage officials at the main(s) office. I ended up wired for a melt down and went to ground.

Seriously though, it was quite a vicious storm and some poles were blown over. The chaps did well to restore things as quickly as they did. It is just a pity the electrical repairmen cannot work after 10 PM because the corporation cannot afford to pay them overtime. The last shift ends at 10 PM and the next one starts at 8 AM.

The bloke who provides internet and phone here is a "one man band" and he works all hours. I don't think he gets a lot of sleep but he tries hard and one shouldn't get angry with him as he is better than the the national utility Telkom because they don't provide any service at all. We have Hobson's choice.

The people up the hill from me have had no electricity for 3 weeks and possibly face another 3 weeks without. The local "affirmative" farmer let his cane fire get out of control and it burned out the transformer. They are currently using a generator and have spent, in 3 weeks, over R3 K on petrol. That's over 200 quid. I am storing a lot of their frozen meat in my freezer because the generator ain't powerful to run their freezer, fridge and water heater. They opted for a fridge and hot water and, of course lights. No oven either so their cooking is done mainly by microwave oven and a gas ring working off bottled gas as we don't have piped gas here in SA except for parts of Joburg.

I suppose these things add to the excitement of living in Africa. Seeing as we no longer get lions wandering into town or elephants in the suburbs.(LOL). Where I live there are snakes (poisonous ones too) wild cats like lynx, wild boars, many antelope and jackals. I can hear the jackals at night and also sometimes the cats and boars come quite close to the fence. Luckily there are not many wild people around here so crime is low, very low.

Enough now, I am getting like Shirley in the length of my posts. (No offence Shirley) so I'd best crawl back into my nest for now.

Hope all you POEsters are well. Hlala Khashle. (Zulu for stay well.)

That's OK Syd, I could use the company sometimes...you guys use solar lights over there?...they say they work good in emergencies.   Ithink and hope I'm prepared for this winter...your right...being in "rural" any place these days makes you have to plan for electrical outtages.  I woke up this morning to the therapist here with my hubby and went out for my walk and ran into my daughter in-law driving down the road to deliver my grandson for the morning.  He's doing well, I was shown today how to chang ehsi dressings. Oct 18 he gets his industrial sized staples out of his leg...he has some goals to meet before then, but should be off the walker by next week and onto an cane. Kind of snappy at times with me as yet, but getting better I hope. I guess that's because I'm generally an quieet patient kind, though I'm learning to hold my own if need be some days. I have heard often that men are like that "house bound" from thier normal daily business schedule...they don't know hwo to handle it.

Hey Ron, I saw an fella on "Wheel of fortune" last night that looked almost like you...he won over $37,000 and two new cars, one an electric, the other an new Honda...but was wearing the name tag of Jerry...which is my hubby's name.  Jack his brother, ended up like hsi father and lost everything...dying to young. His sister was telling me that his ohtehr brother had open heart surgery last year also. It's just my hubby Jerry and Tom still alive. Reminds me of the cartoons called "Tom and Jerry". Anyway Ron, if that was you...come by and let me try out the electric car, they intrigue me, if only they weren't so expensive. The igh gasoline prices have abotu shut down the Oregon Coast from going over there last weekend. Esp. the Hotel and motel business from the looks of things. Gasoline over there was $4.25 an gallon....here in Porltand it;s about $3.89 gallon but everyone is disgusted with those prices also. I best get going for today...James sounds like he's on the move these days for us all.

Have an good day everyone!

Hi all,

yes Shirley we do use solar lights. I have 4 scattered around and they work wel. I also have a solar water heater which gives me hot water up to 70 degrees C and even gives 45 degrees on a cloudy day. The electric element hardly ever comes on. Its great to have almost free hot water.
