Mother and child Low Sweden Coppice Mother and child happily at ease on the lower fells above Ambleside. Lambing must have been a bit late this year as very few lambs around this week This picture appears in the following picture tour: Camera Make: Canon Model: Canon EOS 5D Mark II |
Scandale Hydro Project 2 Another view of the current devastation of the landscape above Ambleside and something you would NOT expect to see on a fell walk ... a sign pointing the way for 'pedestrians' along with barriers. This is the point near Low Sweden Coppice where the works head off to the right and down the fells into Rydal Park This picture appears in the following picture tour: Camera Make: Canon Model: Canon EOS 5D Mark II |
Low Sweden Coppice Low Sweden Coppice is just what it indicates, a bit lower down from High Sweden Coppice towards Ambleside and here we have some rocks, a few trees and a something I don't usually get to enjoy on most of my trips over here.... a bit of blue sky!!! This picture appears in the following picture tour: Camera Make: Canon Model: Canon EOS 5D Mark II |
High Sweden Coppice On the way down towards Ambleside, looking back up to High Sweden Coppice with Sweden Crag in the distance. And a wonderfully constructed dry stone wall in foreground This picture appears in the following picture tour: Camera Make: Canon Model: Canon EOS 5D Mark II |
Scandale Hydro Project ravages the valley I had seen the signs of this Hydro Project back in December and they certainly have come on quite a way. Digging a wide swathe from the Sweden Coppice area and heading of up Scandale. Quite a disturbing mess at present with some wonderful stone walls 'knocked' down although I expect they were done carefully. Apparently there is a clause in the agreement that the contractors have make good on the landscaping front when finished, but I suspect they will still need some sort of access for machinery if and when maintenance is required. Fairfield Horseshoe April 28-4-15 mid afternoon and snow on top of the Fairfield Horseshoe just to the north of Ambleside seen from Borrans Fields by the old Roman Fort Galava Was more that this earlier in the day. Red Screes from Wansfell Pike Standing on top of Wansfell Pike looking west across to Red Screes with the wonderfully named road 'The Struggle' wending its way up from Ambleside to the Kirkstone Inn at the top of the Kirkstone Pass. Behind Red Screes is the northern end of Scandale sloping down towards Ambleside and in the distance the western ridge of the Fairfield Horseshoe of which Scandale forms the eastern ridge. The Fairfield Horseshoe being a very popular 12-13 mile walk albeit with quite a few 'ups' but also some 'downs' in order to catch your breath again. One I still have to do. This picture appears in the following picture tour: Camera Make: Canon Model: Canon EOS 500D |

High Skelghyll Farm The footpath from Ambleside to Troutbeck passes through High Skelghyll Farm so as expected security is very strict ... a piece of string that just loops over a hook !! This picture appears in the following picture tour: Camera Make: Canon Model: Canon EOS 500D |

Path to Loughrigg Summit Having past Loughrigg Tarn and on up the road towards Grasmere but turned off into the woods at the top of Red Bank in order to drop down Loughrigg Terrace off to the left, we see the path that leads upto to the top of Loughrigg Fell. It looks steep, it is steep and there are several false summits just to keep you entertained!! Done it once but need to go again on a good day as the views are quite spectacular This picture appears in the following picture tour: Camera Make: Canon Model: Canon EOS 500D |
