Budleigh Salterton's Otter Mouth

Looking up the River Otter estuary from its outfall at Budleigh Salterton over the ancient saltpans used by Otterton monks. These are now tidal since the mouth was blocked by pebbles many, many years ago.

A load of bull at Budleigh

On the way to White Bridge and the River Otter walks this bull looked up as we passed. He was munching grass and looked calm, thankfully.

This gull was visiting Budleigh on a fleeting visit. He was soaring in the cliff updraughts.

Budleigh sunset

Sunsets in Budleigh can be very colourful. Here the clouds enhance the yellow of the sun and it is also reflected in the sea.

Budleigh roads

Some of Budleigh's roads are very narrow, some are sunken, some are both. This road is called DARK LANE.

This George V pillarbox was knocked over recently by a clumsy, inadvertant motorist. It isn't being replaced, sadly, so it's definitely "last post" for it.

Budleigh's chestnuts

In Autumn the sweet chestnuts fall to the ground in great quantities. The majority are left lying but squirrels gather their suppply. I usually take a selection too.

Scarlet Pimpernel

Other names of this plant are poorman's barometer, shepherd's weather glass or shepherd's clock but I know it as scarlet pimpernel. Not the one Baroness Orczy wrote about in 1905. This plant grows profusely here in Budleigh Salterton in all the odd corners.

School art at Budleigh

Schools in Budleigh had an art display for country animals. The writing on this picture took a bit of working out. It begins with "we are the animals, we have a language ........"

Swans and cygnets of Budleigh

Mr. and Mrs. Swan had four chicks hatch this year but I only saw three this particular morning. Very sad that nature is so wonderful but can be so cruel.

Take a seat

A vacant seat perfectly set to enjoy Budleigh's view of the River Otter as it flows to the sea. A warm coat is advisable, waterproof if possible.

Budleigh sea mist

In November the sea around Budleigh must be warmer than the air. I think that is why there seems to be a mist rising from the surface. It's nothing to fret about really.

Budleigh steps

From Marine Parade in Budleigh there are a series of steps in a footpath that are named "19 Steps". That is very unusual since I have counted them and there are 31 steps in all.

Budleigh blackbird

This young blackbird seems content with eating off the top step. He's not chancing the scrum of the bird table till he grows up.

Budleigh chaffinch

Birds of Budleigh seem to be perpetually hungry. Our bird feeding station is well used and a delight to behold most mornings.

Pepperbox Poppy in Budleigh

This object has dared to grow in our garden. Its colours are vivid and the detailing is beautiful. Obviously not my handywork then!

Sweet chestnuts

These are chestnuts from Budleigh's trees that fall on the path each Autumn. I prefer eating them raw but also roast them if I can get home with some uneaten.

Budleigh moon light

The moon was shining but didn't light Budleigh's Promenade very much at the time. It is, however, still called Budleigh in Moonlight.
